Assistance for consumers: A US institute is labelling the meat for its nutrition profiles
1500 meat products will be split into 12 prepared meat categories included in a database organized by the North American Meat Institute which will be public. Products like bacon, bologna, corned beef, ham, hot dogs, jerky/snack sticks, pastrami, roast beef, salami, sausage and sliced turkey will be labelled according to their nutrition profiles, informs Ktic Radio.
"There’s no question that American consumers are enthusiastic about the great taste of prepared meats, but may not understand the excellent nutrition in these convenient products. Companies offer a wide array of choices and we are eager to help share these many options with our meat-loving consumers so they can make items like deli meats, bacon and hot dogs healthy parts of their balanced diet", said Barry Carpenter, North American Meat Institute president and CEO.
The database, called Product Center, is designed to be easily searchable for consumers and health professionals seeking more information about specific products or brands. The labels are also simple to understand: "low fat", "reduced sodium", "natural", "organic" or "American Heart Association Certified".
The Product Center project is developed to encourage the American consumer to form a diet based on meat but also to be conscious about the nutritious value of every product. Additional information about general nutrition and links to more resources about each particular product are also provided on the Product Center portal.
