Bulgaria reports another ASF outbreak
Bulgarian authorities have reported another African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in a farm located near the Romanian border. The virus was confirmed in a large farm of 17,000 pigs in the village of Nikolovo, close to the border town of Ruse.
"All the pigs in the farm are to be culled", declared one representative of Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BSFA), according to Industria Carnii magazine. 30 new cases of the disease have been reported in Bulgaria in the last 30 days.
According to official data, 99% of the swine population in Bulgaria is growing on industrial pig farms. Last week, the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Desislava Taneva, insisted on timely funding from the European Commission for veterinary programs to tackle the disease. Desislava Taneva said that this assistance is extremely important and the country expects support for the actions of last year. Bulgaria is one of the many East European countries affected by the ASF virus. The disease is deadly for pigs and wild boars but is not affecting humans. Still, the human factor is considered to be responsible for the spreading of the virus through Europe and Asia. There is no vaccine developed for the disease and culling is the only effective measure that authorities can take in a situation like this.
