Namibia's beef exports are surging by 55%

Export abattoirs in Namibia have reported a 55.35 increase in productivity during the first half of the year due to drought-induced marketing. There was also a higher number of cattle exported compared to the figures from H12018, despite the fact that weaner exports to South Africa have dropped due to the foot and mouth disease in the country.
From a total of 245,706 cattle sent in the market in the first six months of 2019, 65% were live exports, 28% were taken by the export abattoirs and only 7% were received in the domestic market.
At the same time, an amount of 452,337 sheep were marketed through various formal channels in the first half of 2019, translating to a 0.62% increase in comparison to the same period in 2018 when 449,545 sheep were marketed, according to New Era Live.
Major shifts in market share were experienced with producers moving their sheep more towards live exports to the detriment of local slaughter facilities. A total of 296,137 sheep were exported live accounting for 65% of the market share. Sheep slaughtered at the export abattoirs accounted for 27% at 120,266 head, whilst those that were slaughtered at the B&C class abattoirs accounted for 8%  at 35,934 sheep.
