Retail meat sales decreased in Switzerland

Except for chicken and sausages, all categories of meat and meat products have reported a decline in turnover. For fresh pork and fresh veal, the declines were significant compared to the other products, down by 1.8% and 2.6% respectively.

According to the Federal Office for Agriculture, the decrease in veal sales was mainly due to the decline in sales of prime cuts such as fillet. Thus, the decline in sales is attributed to the decline in th Swiss veal production, which reported a slaughter volume down by 5.2% compared with 2016.

The only increases in sales were observed for chicken meat (+0.9%) and sausages (+0.8%).
