Spaniards ranked as the 5th fish consumers in the world

Spain is the fifth fish market in the world regarding the average consumption of fish and seafood per capita reported in the last couple of years, show a recent analysis.
Top 5 fish consumers in the world comprise Japan, Iceland, Norway, Portugal, and Spain, the last one with an annual consumption of 25.6 kilos per inhabitant, according to Interempresas portal.
The group of fresh fish is the most consumed, with 46.90% of the total, followed by canned and prepared fish and seafood (18.40%), fresh seafood (13.80%), frozen fish (10 , 80%) and frozen seafood (7.20%), the consumption of cooked seafood (1.90%), salted fish (1.40%) and smoked fish (0.80%) being much more residual.
In Spanish households, the products of fishing and aquaculture account for 13.25% of total food expenditure, with per capita expenditure of €202.44.
At the same time, Spain generates 20% of the total production of the fishing industry in the European Union and is ranked as number 18 as a global producer.
According to the statistics of Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAPAMA) the Spanish catches are accounted for 904,032 MT, worth € 2,095,551,390; aquaculture production reaches 287,501 MT, worth € 561,773,050; and the transformation industry generates 801,336 MT, achieving € 4,229,040.00 in value.

In volume, catches are the group with the highest percentage (45%), followed by industry production (40%) and aquaculture production (15%). In terms of value, it is the industrial production that represents the highest percentage (61%), followed by catches (31%) and aquaculture production (8%).
