Vietnam exported more tuna to Japan in Q2

Although Japan's tuna imports are on a downward trend, Vietnam managed to increase its tuna shipments to this market.

Vietnam exported more tuna to Japan in Q2

According to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers' (VASEP) recent analysis, Vietnam's tuna exports to Japan increased by 36% in the second quarter of 2018 to a value of $7.7 million compared to the same quarter from 2017.

In the first half of 2018, the value of Vietnamese tuna exports to Japan increased by 32% compared to the same period in 2017, to almost $14 million.

VASEP says frozen tuna loins/fillets accounted for 50% of the total value of tuna exports to Japan in the first half of 2018. These type of items and other processed tuna reported an increase in shipments to Japan. On the other hand, exports of canned tuna and other live/fresh/frozen tuna declined.

Overall, in the first five months of 2018, Japan reported a decrease in the volume of tuna imports, which reached only 117 thousand mt. The value of the tuna imports went up by 9.5% to $956 million.
