Spain has increased pork exports to Taiwan by 400%

Spain is holding an 18% share of the pork import market in Taiwan, increasing its exports by 400% in the last 5 years, from 5,031 tonnes in 2014 to 20,998 tonnes in 2018 and from €6.5 million to €46.6 million, according to data presented by INTERPORC.
Taiwan has one of the highest per capita consumption of pork in the world and increasingly needs imports from other areas than Asia to meet demand due to the ASF threat existing in the region.
This represents a good opportunity for large players in the global pork industry to set a stronger foothold in this market. This year, at FOOD TAIPEI fair, Spanish interprofessional association INTERPORC along with 5 Spanish pork producers have organized a an extensive program of activities such as show-cookings with the best Spanish pork, by Julio Li, prestigious Taiwanese chef Hidden by DN restaurant, owned by Daniel Negreira (one Michelin star in its restaurants in Taiwan), or ham tastings carried out by the master cutter, Antonio David Sánchez, sub-champion of the Interporc Spain International Ham Cutters Competition 2018.

Last year, Canada was the main supplier of pork for Taiwan (36,000 tons of pork), while the third place is held by Denmark (12,199 tons). The US is currently ranked as the fourth largest supplier of pork in the Taiwanese market due to a ban imposed on pork with residues of ractopamine.
