Spanish ham sector witnessed a 45% growth in exports in the last 4 years

The export market for Spanish ham (Jamon) has been growing with 45% in the last four years in terms of volume and by 33% in terms of value, according to data collected by ANICE.
In 2018, a total of 65,371 tonnes were exported, representing a growth of 10% compared to the previous year, for a value greater than 500 million euros.

The main buyers of ham are France with 13,584 tonnes (+ 5.3% with respect to 2017), Germany with 12,360 tonnes (+ 8.7%) and Portugal with 9,325 tonnes (+ 22.2%). These countries are accounting for more than half of Spanish ham exports.
Besides these markets inside the EU, Spanish ham is also exported in Mexico, the US, Australia, and Japan. Exports to third countries may increase in the near future, as Spain is expected that its traditional ham (serrano ham, as it is known in the external markets) to be certified as Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).
The PGI is one of the quality figures established by the European Union, which will link the production of Serrano ham exclusively to Spanish territory and can give a boost for the product internationalization.
