Germany: Important step towards a regionalization agreement for the pork export to China
The declaration aims to make it possible to resume exports of pork and other domestic pig products to China in the future, despite the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak. During the Chancellor's trip to China, a roadmap for the recognition of successful regionalization measures related to ASF was also agreed upon. Since the outbreak of ASF in 2020, no German pork products or other domestic pig products have been permitted to be exported to China. In addition, a protocol was signed that, for the first time, allows the export of poultry products to China.
Federal Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer explained : “The declaration of intent is a strong signal and an important step towards ASF-Regionalization agreement. This declaration was made possible by the preparatory work in my ministry. African swine fever requires consistent and targeted control measures. At the same time, we must prevent entire countries from being economically disadvantaged, even though an outbreak is clearly regionally contained. Regionalization creates a fair and practical framework for our farms. With this declaration, both states reaffirm their commitment to work out the technical details promptly and concluding a binding agreement."
