WMC will be held in Brazil this year and hosted by IMS member Instituto Matto-Grossense da Carne (IMAC), the beef production and promotion organization for the region.

IMS World Meat Congress, Cuiaba, Brazil 27-30th October 2025

The Congress will be the premier global event for meat industry leaders and follow on from a successful WMC held in Maastricht in 2023. This editions theme is A new era of meat and will address the key challenges and opportunities being faced by the sectors at the current time.

Following the opening ceremony, the Congress will have a number a thought leaders and key speakers over two days and will be broken down into the following sessions:

Food Geopolitics- a session with speakers from the EU, US, China and Brazil will consider the current volatile global trade position and debate the likely medium to long term impacts

Challenges for animal protein- Rupert Claxton (GIRA) will give a top line overview of the current and forecast production in key producing regions while Dr Thanawat Tiensin, DDG at FAO, will outline their new Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transformation. This session will also include speakers from the commercial sector in the EU, Brazil and New Zealand reflecting on key issues

Sustainable meat production- with the industry striving to deliver progress on sustainability, Dr Ernesto Viglizzo will share thoughts on where we are and what more can be done. He will be joined by Prof Michael Lee of Harper Adams University UK, a leading academic, highlighting the benefits of livestock production to the environment and Gustavo Castro, who heads up environmental research at EMBRPA, Brazil. Eric Mittenthal, Meat Institute US, will also discuss industry preparations and expectations for COP30, also being held in Brazil shortly after the Congress and with agriculture on the agenda

The important area of red meat and human health will be addressed in a session with leading experts, Professor Frederic LeRoy and Dr Andrew Methe who will both consider how consumption impacts and benefits overall health and Dr Carrie Ruxton will respond to the latest recommendations of EATLancet following its release just before the Congress- the report created much debate about meat and dietary health when first published so the updated version will no doubt require close attention for its potential negative narrative for the meat sectors

Covering Animal health, productivity and sustainability, will be representatives from Congress sponsor MSD Animal Health, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the EU Commission, alongside Prof Fernanda Benez from Mato Grosso University.  This session will also include a presentation by the IMS Science prize winner, Brayan Montoya Torres of Texas Tech University whose work looking at the role of lymph nodes in spreading bacteria during beef processing using new sequencing techniques has potential applications for understanding bacterial contamination during slaughter.

The formal Congress will conclude with two linked session of importance to us all, the consumer. The first session will address how the sector should be communicating with the next generation of meat consumers and include presentations form Jose Luis Tejon of Biomarketing, Ann Marie Roerink, lead author of the influential annual Power of Meat survey, Dr David Newman of National Pork Board, US who will discuss their new and extensive promotional campaigns and Adrain Bifaretti, who leads promotions with Argentine beef promotion board, IPCVA. The second session will explore consumer attitudes and purchase behaviour, including non-animal-based proteins, and will be covered by industry experts Prof David Hughes, Imperial College, UK and Tom Rees of insight analysts Euromonitor.
