Pigs slaughter in Brazil, the highest in 24 years

Data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) shows that pigs slaughter has reached a 24-year high in the second quarter of this year. In the monthly index, the best results were registered for the months of April, May and June, providing a record of swine slaughter in the historical series, started in 1997. The record result of fresh pork exports, with a peak in June, helped in this scenario.
The slaughter of 923,560 more heads of swine compared to the same period in 2020 was driven by increased production in 18 of 25 Brazilian states. These numbers increasingly reinforce how the domestic consumption of pork has grown in Brazil, especially in the last year, driven by the affordable value of the protein compared to its main competitors. A survey carried out by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), published in April this year, points to an increase in the consumption of pork in Brazilian households and the preference for protein, especially when compared to beef. In real numbers, this means that in 80% of households pork is preferred, second only to chicken eggs and chicken meat.
"The news serves as a consolation and incentive for producers in a year in which production costs reach the highest level in history. This significant advance in slaughtering signals that internal and external demands are heated, which is a determining factor in the improvement in prices. With this, there is a reduction in our financial losses and greater sustainability for the sector", commented Fernando Araujo, Assuvap president.
