ASSICA: Green light for signing of EU-MERCOSUR agreement welcomed

ASSICA has always supported free trade agreements, economic partnerships, and association agreements between the European Union and third countries because they create clear and stable regulatory frameworks for operators and ensure that health measures are proportionate, scientifically justified, and non-discriminatory, thus avoiding the risk of arbitrary barriers to trade.

“We warmly welcomed the resolution of the impasse toward the signing of the Trade Agreement with Mercosur, thanks to today’s agreement on the safeguard clauses. The negotiations have been long and complex, but we are confident that they will now proceed expeditiously so that all the opportunities offered by this long-awaited and fundamental agreement can be quickly realized”, said Lorenzo Beretta , President of ASSICA.

“For pork companies, Mercosur countries will represent a major future market for pork and beef products. They are already suppliers of beef (primarily Brazil, but also Argentine and Uruguay) for processing into cured meats such as bresaola. The agreement creates the world’s largest free trade area, with over 700 million consumers, and the opportunities for companies are enormous”, Beretta continued.

“I would like to thank our institutions for the great and fundamental work they have done to create new and strong partnerships, at a time in history when international tensions make every step forward in dialogue, cooperation, and the building of stable and lasting relationships even more precious,” concluded the President.
