UK produced 4% less pork during November than a year ago, production stood at 83,100 tonnes, according to data released by Defra and analyzed by the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
AHDB analyst, Bethan Wilkins, said that the production is lower than expected due to poor demand from abattoirs.
Clean pig slaughterings totaled 952,800 head, which was 3% lower compared to November 2017. The overall decline was due to a slowdown in slaughtering across England, here production fell by 5% compared to a year ago. Still, Wilkins said, there have been reported increases both in Scotland and Northern Ireland, by 49% and 1%, respectively.
Wilikins added that the lower slaughterings were emphasised by lighter carcase weights. The average clean pig carcase weighed 83.9kg during November, around 300g lower than a year before.
