Federal Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer has achieved a crucial breakthrough in negotiations to reopen the Chinese market during his talks in China: Chinese experts will soon travel to Germany to assess the animal disease control measures on the ground. This lays the foundation for a concrete regionalization agreement.
At the invitation of German Federal Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer (CSU), Chinese experts will travel to Germany shortly to observe the highly effective measures being taken to combat African swine fever (ASF). This commitment from China’s Agriculture Minister Zhang Zhu and Customs Minister Sun Meijun is considered the crucial next step and a key prerequisite for the desired regionalization agreement. The aim is to limit future trade restrictions to genuinely affected restricted areas based on scientific evidence and in accordance with the rules of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), thus enabling safe deliveries from ASF-free regions of Germany. Both countries recently underscored their commitment to a swift agreement with a declaration of intent during Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s trip to China.
The delegation’s trip from Germany was entirely focused on the agricultural export strategy “Modern Agricultural Exports – Made in Germany” presented in December 2025, which is intended to support medium-sized businesses in rural areas in accessing international markets.
