The volume imported in April is 36% down from the same month a year ago.
Year-on-year, China’s meat imports are down 36% in April, according to the customs data released today. 592,000 tonnes of meat entered the country last month, 36% down from a year ago. Imports have also been impacted by strained logistics caused by an extended COVID-19 lockdown in Shanghai. Meat imports for the first four months of the year were down 36% on a year before at 2.26 million tonnes, according to the data released by the General Administration of Customs.
Demand for imported pork has slumped this year after Chinese hog farmers increased breeding to compensate for losses caused by African swine fever in recent years. Beef imports are also down, due to the lockdown in Shanghai, China’s main gate for this product.
