It is crucial that the EU maintains a common and robust European agricultural policy. This means, among other things, that the current financing of the future European agricultural policy must be maintained. This is so that the desired societal goals can be achieved and real food supply security can be ensured.
This is the essence of a joint statement from the European farmers’ organization Copa and its sister organization Cogeca, which organizes European cooperatives within the agriculture and food sector.
The announcement, dubbed the Stockholm Declaration, was presented at a Copa-Cogeca meeting in the Swedish capital.
– The geopolitical development has clearly emphasized that the EU must and must prioritize much more sharply in relation to the challenges that the development poses to us. This is the message that Copa-Cogeca delivers to the EU’s leaders, says Niels Lindberg Madsen, EU policy manager at the Danish Ministry of Agriculture & Food.
Food supply security is crucial
This applies not least in relation to ensuring significantly strengthened competitiveness and strengthening defense and security policy.
– Developments, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Covid-19 pandemic, have also shown that food supply security is a crucial and central part of a European security policy. In the opinion of Copa-Cogeca, this should be reflected in the EU’s seven-year budget, which the EU’s heads of state and government are now discussing, says Niels Lindberg Madsen.
The Danish Ministry of Agriculture & Food is of course a co-signatory of the Copa & Cogeca declaration through chairman Søren Søndergaard, who is also vice-president of Copa.
