Japanese authorities report another outbreak of Classical swine fever, commonly known as hog cholera. This is the seventh case since September 2018.
Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries (MAFF) has announced that the seventh outbreak was confirmed at a pig farm in the city of Kakamigahara, Gifu Prefecture, on January 29.
According to Outbreak News Today, there were 127 breeding pigs and 1,535 fattening pigs on the farm.
Authorities suspect wild boars to be the source of infection.
“As a result of examining the dead wild animal found in the area surveyed after 13th September and the wild feast that was caught, positive cases of swine fever were confirmed,” the Ministry’s statement read.
Associated Press reported that local farmers are asking for vaccination resources.
The first case of hog cholera was reported on September 9. This was the first case in 26 years. Japan reported its last outbreak in 1992 and declared the virus eradicated in 2007.
