This recognition reflects the evolution of the company’s governance and emissions data quality.
JBS, one of the world’s largest food companies, has earned the Gold Seal from the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, related to its 2025 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Inventory. The company has published its inventory since 2012 and has maintained the Gold level since 2019, a result of a governance process involving all the group’s companies in Brazil, across the areas of Sustainability, Environment, Operations, Utilities, Logistics, Agriculture, Supply Chain, and Information Technology.
The inventory allows for the identification of the main sources of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, monitoring of performance over time, and targeting emission mitigation in operations. JBS has a global goal of reducing the intensity of Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% by 2030, and in the long term, reducing the intensity of Scope 1 and 2 emissions in processing units by 70% by 2050; both goals consider 2019 as the baseline year.
“More than just publishing an inventory, our goal is to ensure that emissions data are increasingly reliable, traceable, and useful for decision-making. The GHG Protocol Gold Seal is an important recognition of this continuous evolution process at JBS, which involves different areas and professionals throughout the company ,” says Liège Correia e Silva, Sustainability Director at JBS Brazil.
The company’s decarbonization strategy includes investments in energy efficiency, expansion of renewable sources, and energy recovery from biogas and biomethane. One example is the partnership between Friboi and Âmbar Energia, part of the J&F group, with an investment of R$ 65 million to expand biomethane production from waste at its Campo Grande II (MS), Lins (SP), and Andradina (SP) plants, adding more than 14 million m³ of biomethane per year to the company’s energy matrix.
The project, present in nine Friboi units, represents, in practice, a sustainability strategy focused on the circularity of operations, in which industrial effluents generated in the factories are reused for the production of biogas and biomethane, which return to the operation itself as renewable energy sources.
The achievement of the certification for the seventh consecutive year is the result of a journey of constant evolution. The company has advanced in the standardization of methodologies and procedures, in strengthening quality controls, in defining responsibilities, and in engaging and training the teams involved in the collection and management of information. The creation of a learning path on environmental data on the JBS training platform is one of the most recent initiatives in this process of developing knowledge and strengthening the quality of reported information.
JBS is also developing new systems integration projects to automate data collection and improve the traceability of inventory information, in addition to new emissions reduction initiatives. “By continuously improving data quality, we can better understand the profile of our emissions, monitor progress toward our targets, and direct more relevant efforts toward our operations,” emphasizes Liège .
The Brazilian GHG Protocol Program adapts the international GHG Protocol methodology to the national context, offering calculation tools for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Created in 2008, it is the result of a partnership between the Center for Sustainability Studies (FGVces), the World Resources Institute (WRI), the Ministry of the Environment, the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), and 27 founding companies.
