Authorities from Kenya announced that the ban on poultry imports from Uganda will be lifted after in January last year it was set because of an avian influenza outbreak, this kept Uganda’s poultry and eggs from entering Kenya’s $5 million market.
Michael Cheruiyot, Deputy Director of Veterinary Services from Kenya, said there has been an assessment made to be sure Uganda is now avian influenza free. Mr. Cheruiyot said that the authorities from this country agreed with the implementation of conditions to ensure the disease is fully contained.
“Uganda government has managed to implement the conditions we agreed last year. Soon Kenya traders will start importing poultry and poultry products from Uganda,” said Mr. Cheruiyot, quoted by mediamax.
According to The Star, Kenya holds a number of 32 million domestic birds, but this is not enough to feed its increasing consumer population.
