Belgians are eating more and more eggs.
The popularity of eggs continues to grow. In 2025, Belgians bought an average of 83 fresh eggs per person, almost 3% more than in 2024.The barn egg remains by far the most popular and represents 74% of the purchased volume. Free-range eggs are gaining importance: their share rose from 12.6% in 2023 to 16.7% in 2025. The eggs offered in Belgium are domestically produced.
Eggs are eaten at all classic mealtimes. Lunch is the most important consumption moment, but they also regularly appear on the table at breakfast and dinner. More than seven out of ten egg consumptions take place at home. Eggs are eaten more often by 18-34 year olds, men, Brussels residents, and people with foreign roots.
The egg is packed with valuable nutrients
An egg offers an interesting combination of many different nutrients: proteins, fats – largely unsaturated –, iron, zinc, selenium, phosphorus, and vitamins B2, B12, A, and D.
White and brown eggs are equally nutritious. The color of the shell is genetically determined and depends on the chicken breed, not the feed.
Inspiration for the whole day
Anyone who thinks only of a boiled or fried egg when it comes to eggs is missing out on a lot of possibilities. Start the day, for example, with scrambled eggs or a breakfast wrap. For lunch, choose an omelet with vegetables, an egg salad, or a generously topped sandwich. A hard-boiled egg or savory egg muffins are convenient protein-rich snacks for athletes. In the evening, eggs can take center stage in a quiche, frittata, shakshuka, or casserole.
