Slaughter volumes in Germany from January to July 2026 were almost at the same level as the previous year. While slightly more pigs of German origin were slaughtered, the number of foreign pigs slaughtered declined significantly.
According to the latest figures from the Federal Statistical Office, pig slaughtering in Germany remained almost at the same level as the previous year up to and including July 2026. A total of 25.95 million pigs were slaughtered from January to July. This was approximately 44,700 animals, or 0.2 percent, more than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Slaughter of domestically sourced pigs continues to account for the largest share and was slightly above the previous year’s level. In German slaughterhouses, 25.52 million domestically sourced pigs were slaughtered. This represents an increase of approximately 103,500 animals, or 0.4 percent, compared to the same period last year. The total volume of carcasses produced rose by 8,600 tons to almost 2.46 million tons.
Slaughtering of foreign pigs, however, declined significantly. Their number fell by approximately 56,300 animals, or 12.0 percent, to 412,600. The resulting slaughter volume decreased by 9.3 percent to around 46,400 tons. Home slaughtering also remained significantly below the previous year’s level.
The overall stable trend continued in July. With just under 3.72 million pigs slaughtered, around 60,000 fewer animals were slaughtered than in July 2025. This corresponds to a decrease of 1.6 percent. The slaughter volume, at approximately 354,300 tons, was about 6,500 tons, or 1.8 percent, below the previous year’s figure.
The slower growth of the pigs due to the high temperatures may have played a role. Overall, the slaughter volume for the first seven months remained almost stable compared to the previous year.
