African swine fever has been confirmed in a wild boar in Brandenburg’s Barnim district, marking the first case there in more than four and a half years.
The infected animal was found within an already secured high-risk zone along the Oder River, and disease control measures are now being reinforced.
African swine fever (ASF) was detected in a wild boar in the Barnim district last week. The Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) confirmed the finding on October 1, 2026.
This is the first confirmed ASF case in Barnim in more than four and a half years. The previous case in the district was confirmed by the FLI on February 2, 2022.
The new case follows the reappearance of ASF in the neighbouring Uckermark region in July 2026.
Case detected inside existing high-risk zone
The infected wild boar was found in the high-risk corridor east of the Oder dike, near the village of Lunow.
The location is therefore within an area that is already secured and subject to disease control measures.
The protective fence erected along the Oder River continues to play an important role in containing the disease. Its purpose is to prevent wild boars from moving uncontrolled from the high-risk area into the protective corridor behind it and further into the district.
The Barnim district is currently coordinating additional measures with the relevant authorities.
These measures include, in particular, the specific design of a second restricted zone.
42 ASF cases confirmed in Uckermark
With the latest finding, Barnim has become the second district in Brandenburg currently affected by African swine fever.
After Brandenburg had remained free of new ASF cases for more than a year, two infected wild boars were discovered in the Uckermark region in early July 2026.
Since then, the number of confirmed ASF cases in Uckermark has risen to 42.
The infected animals were found close to the German-Polish border, within an existing restricted zone II.
The new case in Barnim confirms that ASF remains present in the border region, despite the control measures already in place.
