One of the clearest trends in Spanish food consumption in recent years is the significant role of pork in the shopping basket. Year after year, data shows that pork products maintain a strong and growing presence in households, a trend that has recently been further confirmed.
According to figures from the consulting firm NIQ, consumption of these products in Spanish households increased by 3.1% in volume in 2025, a rise that raises the percentage of pork in total meat consumption to 24.9%. Practically one out of every four kilos of meat consumed in Spanish homes is pork.
This growth is occurring within a dynamic meat market. In the last fiscal year, the domestic meat market (all categories) reached €22.593 billion, representing a 7.5% increase in value.
One of the keys to understanding this evolution lies in the continued importance of fresh meat within the consumer market. This segment represents 63% of the value of the meat market, with a turnover of €14.148 billion, after growing by 8.1% in value and 3.7% in volume in the last year.
In this category, pork plays a particularly important role. Fresh cuts like loin, chops, and tenderloin are staples in the daily cooking of millions of families. In addition to the presence of fresh pork, there is the cultural and gastronomic significance of processed pork products. Cured and cooked products, with ham as a prime example, are part of Spain’s culinary heritage and continue to hold a prominent place in daily diets.
The culinary versatility of pork products, both fresh and cured, along with their high protein content, perfectly aligns with the needs of today’s consumers. These consumers are looking for simple preparations for a varied and balanced diet because pork products are readily available, versatile, and easy to incorporate into both traditional dishes and those adapted to new culinary trends.
Therefore, when analyzing the increase in pork consumption in households, we cannot rely solely on simple market statistics. We must consider all the details that make these products a perfect solution at a time when food has become a central element of well-being, health, and quality of life.
