Spain is making progress in reopening pork markets in Ukraine, Honduras and Ecuador

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) has announced new progress in the reopening of international markets affected by restrictions related to African Swine Fever (ASF), facilitating the recovery of Spanish pork exports to third countries.

Among the most noteworthy developments, the Ministry has confirmed that the new certificate for exporting processed pork products to Ecuador has been agreed upon and is now available. This progress will allow shipments to resume to one of the Latin American markets of interest to the Spanish meat sector.

Spain and Honduras have also agreed on a new health certificate that will allow the resumption of pork exports from areas not restricted by African swine fever (ASF), applying the principle of regionalization in accordance with European Union regulations. Furthermore, the products must have undergone a mitigation treatment recognized by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

On the other hand, Ukraine has officially accepted regionalization in accordance with EU regulations, which reopens the door to the export of fresh Spanish pork under certain health guarantees. In this regard, the established conditions stipulate that the exported meat must come from areas where no cases of African swine fever (ASF) have been recorded in domestic pigs during the 12 months prior to slaughter. Furthermore, the animals must come from farms and slaughterhouses located outside affected areas, with no detection of the disease within a 10-kilometer radius during the 40 days prior to slaughter. The certificate for meat products is currently being implemented electronically.

These advances represent a further step for the Spanish pork sector, which continues to work on the progressive recovery of its exports to markets outside the EU.
