Mexico suspends imports of poultry products from Brazil due to Newcastle disease outbreak

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, through the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), decided to suspend the importation of poultry products from Brazil.

The measure was taken after the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) confirmed an outbreak of Newcastle disease at a commercial broiler chicken farm, located in the municipality of Nova Itaberaba, Santa Catarina.

AGRICULTURA highlighted that the measure was taken with the purpose of protecting national poultry production, given that Mexico is a country free of Newcastle disease.

While awaiting animal health information on the outbreak and following international protocols, the General Directorate of Animal Health -part of Senasica – deactivated the Animal Health Requirements Sheets on its platform, thereby preventing the entry of poultry meat, offal, songbirds and ornamental birds, as well as poultry genetics such as fertile eggs and chicks up to three days old.

The federal Secretariat emphasized that this measure applies to commercial imports and products carried by tourists.
