"American-Chinese business relationships are put at risk by tariffs on beef" - USMEF
The US beef industry could be hit as hard as the American pork businesses in the trade war between Washington and Beijing. The intention of Chinese officials to put beef on the list of agricultural and food products that are subject to retaliatory tariffs of 25% provoked nervousness between the members of US Meat and Export Federation (USMEF).
In a statement from USMEF President and CEO, Dan Halstrom, the group expressed the hope that the trade dispute "can be resolved without China introducing additional obstacles for U.S. beef".
"China is a promising market for U.S. beef, and, since the June 2017 reopening, the U.S. industry has made an exceptional effort to provide customers with high-quality beef at an affordable price.
This is not an easy task, due to our 13-year absence from the market and China’s beef import requirements. If an additional import tariff is imposed on U.S. beef, these constructive business relationships and opportunities for further growth will be put at risk", declared Dan Halstrom.
Official data shows that the US beef exports in the second half of 2017 totalled 3,020 metric tons valued at $31 million. 2018 had a good start for the industry, in January, exports reaching the highest monthly volume, 819 tons, with a value of $7.5 million.
