22% drop in Iran's red meat production
Compared to the summer of 2018, Iran's red meat production has dropped by 22%, according to data presented by the Statistical Center of Iran (SCI).
The report said that beef and veal had the lion’s share in the country’s red meat output during summer with 43,000 tons, followed by lamb and mutton with 25,700 tons, goat meat with 6,100 tons, and buffalo meat with 590 tons.
Iran is among the leading consumers of red meat in the Middle East region with lamb being the most consumed meat, informs Tehran Times newspaper. 10% of the domestic demand is covered by imports of beef, mainly from Brazil, even if lately the Islamic republic has diversified its suppliers by importing meat from Kazakhstan due to prices and shorter routes of supply.
