A long-term sustainable future is needed for British egg farmers
With costs soaring, many egg farmers have had no choice but to cease production rather than face the risk of losing money on every egg they produce. This, together with the added strain on supply due to the loss of some hens because of avian influenza, has led to the current shortage of eggs on retail shelves. Therefore, it is welcome news that some retailers have now committed to investing in the supply chain to support British egg producers.
Andrew Joret, British Egg Industry Council Chairman, said: “The announcement of additional support for British egg producers by some retailers is a welcome step in the right direction however there is still progress to be made to ensure a long-term sustainable future for British egg farmers.
"Our industry is committed to producing the highest quality British Lion eggs and consumers expect their eggs to be British, so it is very reassuring to see that these retailers have pledged to continue stocking only 100% British eggs in their stores.
"Farmers need the assurance that they can produce eggs without the fear of going out of business, and we are confident that supply will return to normal when cost pressures have been eased. In the meantime, we are doing everything we can to ensure that British Lion eggs are on the shelves as shoppers expect, while the industry continues to work with retailers so that it can get back on its feet.
Eggs are one of the most nutritious, sustainable and affordable foods on the shopping list and they play a crucial role in everyday meals for all the family. It is our absolute priority to ensure that there are enough British eggs for all to enjoy."
