ASF virus continues to spread through Vietnam

Vietnam, the latest Asian country confronted with an African Swine Fever outbreak, reports that 7 of its provinces and municipalities are now affected by the disease. The virus has been reported in many pig farms from the northern provinces of Thanh Hoa, Ha Nam, Hung Yen, Thai Binh, Hai Duong and the municipalities of Hai Phong and Hanoi, informs Taiwan News agency.

By now, the UK and the US have prohibited all pork products coming from Vietnam, and the Phillippines is expected to take similar measure. Also, Japan and Australia have increased scrutiny on travellers arriving from Vietnam and raised their fines for bringing undeclared pork products in the country. In fact, Australian authorities have even programmed a simulation exercise, Exercise Rapid Strike, that will take place in Adelaide, South Australia, from 4 to 8 March 2019.

Exercise Rapid Strike will be run by Biosecurity South Australia and aims to provide strategic insight for government agencies and industry, into African Swine Fever (ASF) and response operation.

The exercise will be a desktop exercise and the scenario will be based on an ASF outbreak in order to improve the ASF preparedness of both government and industry.

In Vietnam, authorities are doing their best to stop the virus from spreading in the other 51 provinces of the country but there is a high probability that pork infected with the ASF virus is already on the market in the southern provinces.
