Algeria's red meat production surpassed 500 thousand tonnes in 2017

Algeria's national production of red meat has reached 544 thousand tonnes in 2017, worth 596 billion dinars (4.3 billion euros), according to a statement made by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries of Algeria.

Algeria's red meat production surpassed 500 thousand tonnes in 2017

Last year, the production of sheep meat amounted to 325 thousand tonnes, the goat meat production reached 42 thousand tonnes, while that of beef was 125 thousand tonnes. Meanwhile, in the same year, Algeria's production of camel meat amounted to 10 thousand tonnes and the production of horse meat was 14.1 tonnes.

Algeria reports a total sheep number of 28.4 million head, while it has 1.9 million head of cattle and 5 million goats.

The average consumption of red meat per capita is 14.4 kg per year.
