Argentina could export 40% of its beef in 2021 and surpass the historical record
As he commented, the hypothesis is being handled worldwide that all markets will begin, in the following months, to undergo a recovery process. This would have a direct impact on the prices of Argentine commodities and could lead to a partial reactivation of different sectors.
One of the sectors that would benefit in 2021 is beef. “The international demand for us will continue to increase. Today we already have practically 30% of the beef production destined for export, practically all to China and Southeast Asia ”, he said.
Taking into account the hypothesis of the improvement in global economic conditions, Seggiaro stated: "I would not be surprised if looking at the second and third quarters of next year, Argentina is exporting 40% of the beef" it produces. This would mean breaking all known historical records so far.
He admitted that this may come as a surprise to many producers who have had to compress their feedtlots this year and reduce their replenishment levels, or to those who work in mixed fields who need to dispose of their animals due to crop problems.
With that in mind, the economist was equally optimistic and added that due to the lack of foreign exchange, the government would refrain from putting restrictions on meat in a hypothetical scenario like this one.
‘’The government is already showing that it wants to lower withholdings on meat exports and increase refunds. Beef no longer has the political and social weight that it had decades ago. Let's think that today chicken consumption is at 50 kilos per inhabitant per year. Today more chicken is consumed than beef, it seems incredible but it is like that ”, he reflected.
