Argentine sheep meat exports increase

The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries of the Ministry of Economy of the Nation reported that sheep meat exports between January and July 2025 reached 4,210 tons, representing an increase of 2.51% compared to the same period in 2024 and a cumulative growth of 19% compared to 2023, according to data provided by SENASA.

July 2025 stood out particularly, with 402 certified tons, representing a year-on-year increase of 89.5% compared to the same month the previous year.

Regarding destinations, Argentine sheep meat maintains a presence in strategic markets such as Brazil, Tunisia, Oman, Curaçao, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, and continues to gain ground in other destinations such as Spain, Russia, the Bahamas, and Saint Martin. Specifically, exports to the European Union registered an increase of nearly 70% in the period from January to July 2025, reaching a record high for the series since 2019.

Additionally, Argentine has two quotas for sheep exports. The first is 17,006 tons per year (bone-in beef equivalent), granted annually by the European Union, and the second is 5,994 tons per year, granted annually by the United Kingdom.

Adding to this situation is a long-awaited announcement for the sector: Chile's Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) has decided to reinstate sanitary recognition of Argentine's foot-and-mouth disease-free zone without vaccination and lift the suspension of imports of bovine and ovine products from Patagonia. Thus, the Chilean market is once again open to Argentine lamb.
