Australia changes the regulation on livestock transport
Ships built or converted before 2004 that are used to carry livestock and do not meet minimum airspeeds across livestock pens, carried livestock in two tiers, or failed to meet ventilation requirements on open decks will no longer operate in Australian ports starting 2020, informs Logistics Middle East magazine.
Before that decision was made, at the beginning of June, old livestock vessels using a two-tier system were allowed to operate until 2023. The decision is following a big scandal regarding the death of 2,400 sheep on a voyage to the Middle East.
Three Middle East ships are targeted by the new measures announced by the Australian authorities: Al Shuwaikh, operated by Kuwait Livestock Transport and Trading, and the Bader III and Maysora, operated by Livestock Shipping Services.
