Bavaria enables unbureaucratic use of exemption for butchers in case of ASF

This was emphasized by Bavaria's Minister of Consumer Protection Thorsten Glauber in Munich. "Our Bavarian butchers stand for high-quality craftsmanship. We want to prepare our butchers as best as possible for an ASF outbreak. A supply of high-quality regional meat and sausage specialties from Bavaria must be ensured. To this end, we are relying on simple and unbureaucratic solutions. With the new pragmatic approach, our Bavarian companies can continue to work without unnecessary restrictions", said Glauber. The Free State is making use of an exception in EU law that allows artisanal companies in particular to forego a so-called designation procedure. In order to make it as easy as possible for the affected companies to use this exception, only a simplified notification requirement is planned in Bavaria in the future - that is, a notification to the responsible authority of the desire to process meat from pigs from ASF restriction zones. To this end, the districts, independent municipalities and governments will issue corresponding general decrees.

The background to this is an EU requirement in the event of an outbreak of ASF. In this case, restriction zones must be set up around the outbreak site. The establishment of the legally required restriction zones is linked to restrictions on the marketing of pigs and pork. For example, pigs that have been kept in certain ASF restriction zones may, without exception, be slaughtered in operations that have been specifically designated for this purpose as part of an approval process. The same applies in principle to the further processing of the pork obtained from them. In this case, however, EU law offers the possibility of exceptions.

At the same time, every effort will continue to be made to enable the slaughter of pigs from ASF restriction zones in Bavaria. In this regard, a round table with the Bavarian slaughterhouse industry will be held this year.

Bavaria has been preparing intensively for ASF for a long time. The various preventive measures against ASF are constantly being reviewed and adapted to the current situation. ASF is an animal disease that only affects domestic pigs and wild boars. The ASF virus is harmless to humans and other animal species. No cases of ASF have been reported in Bavaria to date.
