Britain's campaigners on state of alert over a US-UK free trade deal

A future free trade deal between the US and Great Britain is raising concerns over the food safety standards of the animal products from the USA, claim campaigners of Soil Association who identified 10 Food Safety Risks that need to be discussed before they undermine British policies in the field.

"Some of the key differences between UK and US production – hormone-treated beef, GM crops and chlorinated chicken – are becoming increasingly understood by British consumers", mentioned Soil Association in a press release.

Also, there are other questionable matters that worry the campaigners, experts from Soil Association issuing a brief about the risks posed by the American products. Besides hormone-treated beef, GM Crops and chlorinated chicken, the document mentioned ractopamine in pork, chicken litter as animal feed, food colorants, azodicarbonamide, potassium bromate, brominated vegetable oil and atrazine-treated crops as genuine dangers for the safety of the British consumers. Most of these substances are banned in the UK and the EU.

"Any future trade deal between the UK and the US needs to properly protect UK consumers and maintain the current high food safety standards. British farming has a reputation for high food safety and high animal welfare. Any future trade negotiations must be conducted transparently and with input from public stakeholders.", said Honor Eldridge, Policy Officer at the Soil Association.
