Bulgaria reports new ASF outbreak
The Bulgarian Food Security Agency reported another outbreak of African Swine Fever (PSA) this month. According to the notification sent to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), the virus was found on a pig farm in Lovec. According to the notification report, 554 pigs were exposed to the virus and they were all culled. The last ASF outbreak reported by the Bulgarian authorities was on August 25. Last year, Bulgaria lost almost 30% of its national swine inventory and the country is highly dependent on pork imports.
At the same time, OIE announced that between, September 18 and October 1, 313 new outbreaks of African swine fever were reported in the world. The total number of outbreaks in progress rose from 7,373 to 7,429, with 3,902 in Romania and 1,475 in Vietnam alone. Of the new outbreaks, 220 have been reported in Europe and 93 in Asia.
In Europe, Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Ukraine still show the incidence of the disease. In Asia, China, India, Indonesia, North Korea, South Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Russia, East Timor and Vietnam have cases underway. In Africa, countries such as Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia have reported the presence of the virus.
