China culls 8,000 pigs in its first ASF outbreak
Chinese authorities from Liaoning Province said they have contained by culling 8,116 pigs that were located in farms near the zone where the ASF outbreak was reported at the end of last week.
"The virus in the cordoned off zone has been contained, but quarantine measures will continue until six weeks after the elimination of the virus, mentioned an official from the Liaoning Animal Health Authority, according to Global Times newspaper.
Sales of pork have already been affected by the outbreak in the domestic market but also in foreign markets. Japan has suspended imports of heat-treated Chinese pork along with the imports of sausage casings and rice straw used for beddings for pigs, reports Reuters.
Raw pork imports from China are already banned due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
Since May, the first month of tariffs imposed on US pork, China's hog price increased by 30%, reaching almost $2 per kilo and it could go higher in case of disease spreading in the country. "If ASF got rolling in China, it would be a huge market mover", Jim Long, Genesus CEO and President, said in his global market report.
