China rises pork imports by 62.8%
China's pork imports have grown by 62.8% in June compared to the same month last year, according to data collected by the General Administration of Customs. However, the volume of 160,467 tonnes is down by 14% on a monthly basis.
China’s pork imports for the first half of the year stood at 818,703 tonnes, representing an increase of 26.3% from a year earlier. The African Swine Fever situation in the country is driving imports of animal protein to higher levels, although China is encouraging local producers of poultry and beef to increase their production as an alternative for pork.
Pork prices have also increased reaching an average wholesale of 23.76 yuan ($3.45) per kg (+36.4% y-o-y). Retail prices have also picked up to 27.29 yuan ($3.96) per kg (+34.6% y-o-y). The pork output reported in the first six months of the year has decreased by 5.5%, according to official data, although there are voices who claim that the decline is larger.
