China to increase pork production by 20% - USDA
USDA revised the prognosis on the Chinese pork market. According to the outlook released this month, China will increase pork production by 20.39% to 43.75 million tonnes but the need for imports will also be elevated. Analysts are expecting a total volume of 5 million tonnes to cover the demand in the domestic market, up 150.000 tonnes from the latest market outlook released in April.
The national pig inventory for 2021 was estimated at 410 million head, down from the 420 million indicated in April. At the end of 2017, the period before the African swine fever, the herd was 441.59 million head.
For slaughter, the forecast for 2021 is 550 million head, above the 520 million head indicated in the April report. The advance of slaughter may be the result of the greater participation of farmers in the market, because of the high cost, losses and fears of African swine fever (PSA). As a result, prices in the swine chain have collapsed in China, which could result in less import impetus from China in the short term. Currently, Spain, Brazil, the US, Canada and the Netherlands are the main suppliers of pig meat in the Chinese market.
