Croatia culls 10,000 pigs due to new ASF outbreak

The Croatian Minister of Agriculture, David Vlajčić, emphasized that the culling is necessary. The most extensive outbreak of the epidemic was located at the Belje Sokolovac company farm in Baranya, but the virus was also detected in the area of Nemetin, also in the east of the country.

"We are facing the largest outbreak of this disease ever recorded in Croatia. The epidemic continues to spread despite all measures taken, exclusively because of the human factor—irresponsibility and illegal activities", the minister stated.

Since 2023, Croatia has lost 41,000 pigs to African swine fever, with the latest measure bringing the total to over 50,000. This figure represents approximately 5% of the total pig population in Croatian farms.

"If we don't take decisive action, we will soon find ourselves in a kind of isolation within the European Union, which would cause immeasurable damage to the Croatian pig farming sector, and we will not allow that to happen", the Croatian Minister of Agriculture warned.
