Cured ham gains ground abroad in the first months of 2022

Foreign sales of cured hams have grown by 11.2% in volume and 23.4% in value in the first five months of 2022. In total, they have been exported 24,608 tons for a value of 239.1 million euros, compared to 22,137 tons and 193.7 million in the same period of the previous year.

Cured ham gains ground abroad in the first months of 2022

Growth is very similar both in bone-in hams and shoulders and in boneless ones. Thus, bone-in products have gone from 3,151 tons to 3,789 (+20.2%); while its growth in value has been even higher, since, compared to the 29.8 million euros invoiced in 2021 between January and May, this year 37.4 million euros have been invoiced for this concept (+25, two%).

For its part, boneless ham and shoulder have reached 16,925 tons, compared to 14,177 the previous year (+19.4%). That means, in value, going from 139.7 million euros to 170.7 (+22.2%).

Cooked hams and shoulders have also experienced great growth in their exports, specifically 41.5% in volume (from 2,212 tons to 3,129) and 26.6% in value (from 10.8 to 13.7 million euros ).

The director of the Interprofesional del Porcino de Capa Blanca (INTERPORC), Alberto Herranz, points out that "ham is undoubtedly one of our best-known products, and the fact that its exports continue to grow at a good pace in mature markets shows that we have traveled in areas of high competition, in which the pig sector is well established thanks to the diversification strategy that has been followed".

For his part, Daniel de Miguel, International Director of INTERPORC, details that the three countries in which there has been the greatest percentage growth in volume in that five-month period are: Japan (+119.8%, reaching 537 tons), the United States (+100.3%, up to 1,112 tons) and China (+73.6%, up to 884 tons); with growth in value, respectively, of 99.8% (up to 6.2 million euros), 98.4% (up to 14.2 million euros) and 56.4% (up to 14.1 million of euros).

All in all, France (5,096 tons and 47.6 million euros), Germany (4,575 tons and 38.5 million euros), Portugal (2,614 tons and 14.1 million euros) and Italy (1,242 tons and 12.1 million euros) continue to be the leading destinations for Spanish hams and shoulders in volume.
