Danish Crown technology wins sustainability award
Last week, the technology was celebrated by the Branded Suppliers with the award of this year's sustainability award, to the great joy of both Danish Crown and CEO Peter Foged Larsen from AgroGas.
"I am simply so proud that we are winning this award and our partnership with Danish Crown. It is proof that people outside of agriculture have also noticed what we are doing", says Peter Foged Larsen, pointing out that AgroGas would not be where they are today without the partnership with Danish Crown.
"We chose to invest in the technology at an early stage precisely because we saw the potential in being able to deliver effective reductions to farmers. At the same time, we have put a lot of effort into our co-ownership, and we are experiencing that it is paying off. Both farmers and international food giants are currently interested in the technology, but the big push will only happen if customers are willing to pay a slightly higher price for our products", says Nicolaj Nørgaard, Director of Owner Service at Danish Crown.
The Branded Suppliers is a commercial interest group for suppliers to the Danish retail trade and has, among others, Danish Crown on its board. It is among the members of MLDK that the nominations must be found, and it is therefore formally Danish Crown, which is co-owner of AgroGas, that has won the award. Danish Crown wins ahead of companies such as Arla, Carlsberg and Royal Unibrew.
The preliminary test results of Agrogas' technology show that the total climate footprint of a slaughter pig can be reduced by up to 20 percent, and similar results are expected for cattle.
The technology works by collecting and burning methane from covered slurry tanks, which is converted into CO2 and water, and since methane is a 28 times stronger greenhouse gas than CO2, the climate footprint from the slurry is reduced by over 95 percent in the process.
Today, three plants are installed at pig farms, and in January AgroGas reached an agreement with Viking Danmark to install two new plants at cattle farms. In addition, two international food giants have signed agreements to invest in additional plants, which Danish Crown and AgroGas expect to be able to share more about soon.
