Danish pig inventory declines by 4.4%
April marked a decline of 4.4% in the Danish pig inventory, accelerating the decline rate since January this year. The total number of heads reached 12.17 million, with 560,000 less than the same month last year.
“The largest declines were seen in fattening pig numbers (> 50kg) falling by 8.5% from last year. This is likely due to the strengthening of weaner export markets, with January live export figures highlighting a month on month rise of 25% (280,000 head)”, explained Alex Cook, AHDB Analyst. Nevertheless, the decrease of 4.4% in the number of piglets, followed by a drop of 4.7% in the sow inventory can be translated in continuing uncertainty for Danish pork production, according to the analyst.
