EU increases pork production during the first five months of the year

Eurostat data analyzed by AHDB show that, in May, pork production in EU reached 2.07 million tonnes, up by 3% compared to the same month of 2017. The growth was driven by an increase of 2% in slaughtering (22.1 million head) and a higher average weight of the carcasses 93.4 kg (+1%).
In the first 5 months of the year, the production of pork from the EU already amounts to 10.2 million tonnes, which is almost 500,000 tonnes more than in 2017, 5% more, with 110 million pigs slaughtered.
During May, Germany has reported a decrease of 7% in production (-33,000 tonnes) compared to the same month last year. Nevertheless, the country is the largest producer of pork inside EU, with 2.3 million tonnes registered between January to May (15%).
Poland has also grown its pork production by 10% in the first five months of this year and Spain reported an increase of 9% (+158,000 tonnes) during this time.
At the same time, the ASF outbreaks reported in Poland didn't stop investors to pour money in this sector, several Polish companies reporting investments in the improvement and modernization of their plants, anticipating possible future production increases.
