EU pork exports to Korea fell by 31%
During the first six months of the year, pork imports in South Korea have dropped by 22%, while pig slaughter for January-June was estimated as 4% higher than the levels reported a year earlier, according to KMTA. The increased domestic supply may have limited import requirements, alongside disruption due to the coronavirus pandemic and high global pork prices because of the Chinese ASF outbreak. "The South Korean pig meat market was weaker during the first half of 2020, with fresh/frozen pork imports down by 22% compared with January to July last year, totalling 262,000 tonnes. All of the main suppliers have been affected, with shipments from the EU back by 31%, at 110,500 tonnes," says Bethan Wilkins, senior analyst for AHDB. South Korea was hit by ASF outbreaks last year, with 14 pig farms infected with the deadly disease but no other case, except in wild boars, has been reported since October.
