EU's double standard test-stress to start in April

A large-scale operation to discover double standard products will take place starting from April in 16 EU Members States, announced Vera Jourova, Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality.

"The harmonised testing protocol should be ready by April. In May, a coordinated testing campaign should be launched with at least 16 EU countries participating. The tests will involve the composition of a common market basket of products which are marketed in most Member States and will include chemical and sensory testing. We hope to present first results by the end of 2018.", explained the EU official.

Also, commissioner Jourova made it clear that she intends to request an overhaul of consumer law which it will be proposed to the Member States and the European Parliament in April. "When we will have completed these steps, I consider that the Commission will have accomplished its part in relation to the dual quality food issue. It will subsequently be for national authorities to take up the challenge and to demonstrate that they also take the issue seriously", said Vera Jourova.
The harmonised testing protocol was developed between The Commission's Joint Research Centre and representatives from the food industry and all key stakeholders concerned. Double standard quality of food has become a serious concern in EU and EC President Jean Claude Juncker insisted that a problem like this can create a perception of second-class consumers inside the single market.
