Europe has set new rules on organic products
The Council of Europe has adopted a new set of rules regarding the organic production and labelling of organic products that it will come in force stating 1st of January 2021.
The new regulation favours the sustainable development of organic production in the Union, in addition to ensuring fair competition for farmers and operators, preventing fraud and unfair practices and improving consumer confidence in organic products, reports CDE Comunicacion portal.
The existing set of rules are uneven across the EU due to a wide range of exceptions and the equivalence principle applicable to imported organic foods created situations in which different standards were applied to different producers in the same country.
The main measures included in the new legislative framework includes:
- Production standards will be further simplified and harmonized by phasing out a series of exceptions and exceptions.
- The control system will be strengthened through stricter precautionary measures and robust risk-based controls throughout the entire supply chain.
- Producers from third countries must comply with the same set of rules as those produced in the EU.
- The scope of the organic standards will be expanded to additional production standards (eg, deer, rabbits and birds) of corral).
Thanks to the new rules, consumers who buy a product that bears the EU eco-logo can be assured of obtaining the same quality throughout the EU, according to the law text.
