FMD outbreak affecting free-range beef cattle herd was reported in Israel
Dr Shlomo Garazi, Chief Officer for Import and Export of the Veterinary Services at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said a foot and mouth disease laboratory, the Kimron Veterinary Institute, carried out an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), pathogen isolation on cell culture and real-time PCR tests.
The local authorities reported 218 animals that were found to be susceptible to the FMD virus (serotype O), out of which 50 animals were found affected. There were no deaths reported and the affected animals were not killed or disposed of.
The epidemiology investigation is still ongoing as the source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
From herd of free range beef cattle that contained four different groups only one of them was affected. According to OIE, the affected group comprised of 80 dams, 30 calves and eight bulls.
