Fish consumption in Germany rose to 14.2 kilograms per capita

Fish and seafood become more and more popular amongst the German population although the prices for these products are high. Consumption per capita increased from 13.5 kilograms to 14.2 kilograms in 2017, according to Fisch-Informationszentrum (FIZ).

Fish consumption in Germany rose to 14.2 kilograms per capita

 

Over the past year, sales of fish and seafood reached 1.16 million metric tons in Germany. The food retail sector sold 411,876 tons in 2016, which was below the quantity purchased in the previous year of 420,402 tons. In the mean time, the value of purchases saw an increase of 2.4%, to 3.8 billion dollars.

The salmon was the most popular fish amongst the Germans, followed by the Alaska pollock, herring, tuna, and trout. Overall, the share of sea fish was 60.3 percent, freshwater fish reaching 29.3 percent.
