France: INTERBEV welcomes major European agreement for transparency and protection of meat denominations
The agreement reached formalizes the protection of several denominations, including the term "steak"—an unprecedented victory for the livestock and meat sector, which has seen this term usurped by plant-based protein products for far too long. These terms will henceforth be reserved for products containing meat and may no longer be used to designate products that do not contain it, such as plant-based substitutes or those derived from cell cultures.
This protection is part of a dynamic effort to improve transparency within the internal market and will allow consumers to make informed choices through the clear identification of meat products. The provisional agreement must now be approved by the Council of the EU and the European Parliament before being officially adopted and entering into force.
INTERBEV will remain attentive to the continuation of European work within the CMO framework aimed at strengthening the protection of other denominations traditionally associated with meat products, such as schnitzel.
Jean-François Guihard, President of INTERBEV: "The agreement reached between the European institutions marks a long-awaited clarification on the use of denominations historically associated with meat. We salute the commitment of MEP Céline Imart, who contributed significantly to moving this dossier forward. This decision marks the recognition of a raw, 100% natural product against ultra-processed substitutes that adopt the codes and denominations of meat for essentially marketing purposes. It is, above all, a matter of transparency and loyalty toward consumers, who must be able to clearly identify the nature of the products they purchase. This agreement also represents a recognition of the work of industry professionals and the value of our products, derived from animals raised under demanding practices regarding traceability, environmental respect, and animal welfare."
